Learning Recommendations: Completion of the first year of IB Physics HL 1. Concurrent enrollment in Pre-Calculus or a higher-level math course

General Description: IB Physics HL 2 is the second year of a two-year course sequence designed to prepare students for the IB Higher Level Physics exam in May. This course also lays the groundwork for university-level physics studies and meets one college prep science requirement as a lab-based or algebra-based science course, according to the Higher Education Board of Washington State.

Content:

  • Thermal Physics and Thermodynamics principles
  • Wave Phenomena and Behavior: Electromagnetic and Mechanical Waves
  • Quantum and Nuclear Physics: Matter as waves, photoelectric effect, x-rays, Fission and fusion, radioactive decay
  • Electricity and Magnetism: Electrostatics, DC circuitry, electromagnetic induction
  • Lab skills and measurement techniques as related to the internal assessment project

Homework: Homework will involve web-based assignments, laboratory reports, research projects, and preparation for assessments.

Equipment to be Provided by Student:

  • 1” or 1.5” 3-ring binder dedicated to IB Physics
  • Scientific calculator (graphing calculator is acceptable but not required; TI-30XIIS recommended for scientific calculator; TI-brand recommended for graphing calculator, non-CAS).
