General Description: IB Exercise Science SL focuses on the scientific principles underlying physical performance and health. This course prepares students for the IB Standard Level Exercise Science exam in May and fulfills one college prep science requirement as a lab-based science course, as outlined by the Washington Student Achievement Council (WSAC). It explores the role of exercise scientists in designing training programs and promoting health, integrating anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, psychology, and nutrition in the context of sport and exercise.

Content:

  • Anatomy and Physiology: Study of the human body systems, tissues, and muscles, heart dissection lab, respiratory principles
  • Biomechanics: Mechanical principles related to movement and performance, Newton’s laws and injury prevention
  • Psychology: Mental aspects influencing sports and exercise
  • Nutrition: Dietary requirements for athletes and their impact on performance and health
  • Optional Topics: Principles of training and exercise for health

Homework: Homework includes data analysis, lab reports, independent research projects, and exam preparation.
