Chemistry Laboratory Methods - SCI125

Learning Recommendations: Familiarity with the steps in the scientific process, investigative design, and basic lab skills. Concurrent enrollment in Algebra 1 or a higher math level is recommended. This course is foundational for higher-level Chemistry and Biology courses and can be taken the same year as Physics Laboratory Methods

General Description: Chemistry Laboratory Methods is a semester-long course that introduces students to the fundamental concepts of chemistry through inquiry and application. The course covers topics such as atomic structure, periodic trends, chemical bonding, and nuclear reactions. It emphasizes critical thinking, problem-solving, and scientific inquiry, providing the foundational knowledge and lab techniques necessary for advanced chemistry and biology courses. This course fulfills the college prep requirements as a lab-based science course, as outlined by the Washington Student Achievement Council (WSAC).

Content:

  • Atomic Structure of Matter: Understanding atoms and their components
  • Periodic Table: Exploring trends and relationships
  • Classification of Matter: Differentiating between various types of matter
  • Chemical Bonding: Learning about bond types and naming compounds
  • Conservation of Matter: Principles of mass conservation in reactions
  • Lab Safety: Proper use and care of lab equipment
  • Heat and Energy Transformations: Studying phase changes and energy dynamics
  • Nuclear Reactions: Basic concepts of nuclear chemistry

Homework: 0-10 minutes per night
