General Description: AP US Government and Politics is a year-long, college-level course that provides an analytical perspective on government and politics in the United States. The course includes the study of general concepts used to interpret U.S. government and politics and the analysis of specific case studies and foundational documents. It aims to familiarize students with the various institutions, groups, beliefs, and ideas that constitute U.S. government and politics and to support their growth as productive members of a democratic society. The course prepares students to take the AP exam for United States Government and Politics in May, which may make them eligible for college credit or advanced standing.

• Big Idea 1: Constitutional Democracy: Understanding the principles and foundation of American democracy.
• Big Idea 2: Civil Rights and Civil Liberties: Examining the protection and expansion of individual rights.
• Big Idea 3: American Political Culture and Beliefs: Exploring the development of political beliefs and behaviors.
• Big Idea 4: Political Participation: Understanding the mechanisms of political participation in the United States.
• Big Idea 5: Interaction Among Branches and Institutions of Government: Analyzing the relationships and interactions among governmental institutions.

Homework: Students should expect between 2-3 hours a week of outside reading and work. This includes reading textbooks, primary and secondary documents, and other materials to prepare for the AP exam and meet the expectations of a college-level course.

AP Exam Information: Students must register for the AP exam for this course, with fees varying each year. Scholarships are available for students who qualify.
