General Description: IB History of the Americas HL 1 is the first part of a two-year course sequence that prepares students for the Higher Level (HL) IB History exam, taken in their senior year. This course offers a comparative and multi-perspective approach to the history of the Americas, focusing on political, economic, social, and cultural developments. Emphasizing critical thinking and the exploration of multiple historical interpretations, the course encourages students to think historically, develop analytical skills, and gain a comprehensive understanding of the past.

Content: The course primarily covers U.S. history from the Civil War to the present, with comparative studies of Latin America and Canada. Key units of study include:

  • Civil War and Reconstruction
  • The Great Depression
  • World War II
  • The Cold War
  • The Civil Rights Movement
  • The Vietnam Era
  • The Emergence of Contemporary America

Additional Information: Skyline offers the IB History exam at both the Standard and Higher Levels. To sit for the Higher Level exam, students must complete both IB History of the Americas HL 1 - SS651A/B in 11th grade and IB History HL 2 in 12th grade. This course is NCAA-approved and provides 1.0 Social Studies credit for the full year.
