IB Theory of Knowledge 1 - SS662A/B

Learning Recommendations: Students should be able to analyze and synthesize information to construct written and oral arguments. This course is mandatory for IB Diploma candidates.

General Description: IB Theory of Knowledge (TOK) 1 A is the first part of a course designed to stimulate critical self-reflection on the nature of knowledge and the processes by which it is acquired. The course challenges students to question the bases of knowledge across various disciplines and fields. Students will explore the strengths and limitations of different types of knowledge, the relationship between knowledge and values, and the role of language in conveying knowledge.

This course also introduces and provides support for the Extended Essay (EE) and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) components required for the IB Diploma.

Content: Key topics and activities include:

  • Reading and comprehending philosophical texts
  • Exploring philosophical ideas and developing personal philosophical insights
  • Constructing and supporting complex arguments
  • Investigating the nature of the mind, ethics, ways of knowing, and the nature of language and thought
  • Understanding how knowledge is constructed, judged, and conveyed
  • Understanding how knowledge acquisition and creation work in connection with ethics, methods and tools, perspectives, and scope
  • The areas of knowledge, including mathematics, natural sciences, human sciences, the arts, and history
  • The core theme of knowledge and the knower, and additional themes including technology, language, politics, religion, and indigenous societies
  • Projects and assignments related to the TOK Exhibition, which is internally assessed and externally moderated by the IB

Equipment to be Provided by Student: None.

Course Fees: There is a ManageBac fee (approximately $20). Students concerned about the cost should consult the ASB bookkeeper or their counselor.

Additional Information:  To qualify for the IB Diploma, students must complete both IB Theory of Knowledge 1 in 11th grade and IB Theory of Knowledge 2 in 12th grade. The course is NCAA-approved and provides 1.0 elective credit for the full year.
