IB Theory of Knowledge 2 - SS663A/B

Learning Recommendations: Successful completion of IB Theory of Knowledge 1 is required. Students should be able to analyze and synthesize information to construct written and oral arguments. This course is mandatory for IB Diploma candidates.

General Description: IB Theory of Knowledge (TOK) 2 A is the second year in the TOK course sequence, continuing the exploration of the nature and construction of knowledge. Students will delve deeper into the assumptions, concepts, and issues underlying various disciplines and fields. The course further develops students' understanding of the interrelationships among these disciplines, as well as their ability to critically evaluate different kinds of knowledge and their conveyance through language.

This course also provides continued support for the Extended Essay (EE) and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) components required for the IB Diploma.

Content: Key topics include:

  • Reading and comprehending philosophical texts
  • Exploring philosophical ideas and developing personal philosophical insights
  • Constructing and supporting complex arguments
  • Investigating the nature of the mind and the nature of language and thought
  • Understanding how knowledge is constructed, judged, and conveyed
  • Understanding how knowledge acquisition and creation work in connection with ethics, methods and tools, perspectives, and scope
  • The areas of knowledge, including mathematics, natural sciences, human sciences, the arts, and history
  • Projects and assignments related to the TOK Essay, which is externally assessed by the IB

Equipment to be Provided by Student: None.

Course Fees: There is a ManageBac fee (approximately $20) and an IB Diploma Programme fee (approximately $20 for a graduation stole). Students concerned about the cost should consult the ASB bookkeeper or their counselor.

Additional Information:  To qualify for the IB Diploma, students must complete both IB Theory of Knowledge 1 in 11th grade and IB Theory of Knowledge 2 in 12th grade. This course is NCAA-approved and provides 1.0 elective credit for the full year.
