Honors Contemporary World History - SST223

Learning Recommendations: Successful completion of World History is recommended. This course pairs with Honors Global Studies. It is strongly advised for students considering IB Humanities courses in their junior and senior years.

General Description: Honors Contemporary World History studies the geographic, political, economic, social history of, and history of the 20th century. The course focuses on changes that took place during the 20th century and set the stage for globalization and the current world order. This course, combined with Honors Global Studies, will allow an in-depth study of pressing global events and issues of the last half century, with a focus on political, economic and social history--and how that history is currently influencing the world we live in.

  • Origins and development of the Cold War.
  • Proxy wars and global responses to conflict.
  • Decolonization and the formation of world governments.
  • Globalization of the economy.
  • Social activism and movements for change.

Homework: Homework will include preparatory readings for discussions, writing assignments, research projects, and group work.
