Course Description

Students begin this health course by exploring the many dimensions of wellness and learning practical ways to take charge of their own health. The semester continues with a focus on mental health, including stress management, emotional well-being, and strategies for building resilience. Students then examine the role of good nutrition and healthy eating habits in lifelong wellness. Next, they take an in-depth look at substance use and abuse, exploring the effects of alcohol, tobacco, vaping, and drugs, as well as prevention and treatment options.

As a required component of the course, students complete an online CPR and First Aid certification class, gaining essential life-saving skills and earning a nationally recognized credential.

The course then transitions to FLASH lessons, beginning with an exploration of sexuality and culture, emphasizing personal values, relationships, and respectful communication. Students continue with FLASH lessons on human reproduction, receiving accurate information about anatomy, puberty, and reproductive health. The course concludes with a study of communicable diseases, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV, with an emphasis on prevention and healthy decision-making.
