Course Description

This course introduces students to the geography, history, government, and economy of Washington State and the Pacific Northwest. Students begin by exploring the state’s diverse physical regions, migration patterns, and the relationship between people and the environment. They then trace major historical developments-from early Indigenous cultures and the treaty-making era to statehood, industrial growth, and modern social and economic change-while considering multiple perspectives.

Students also study the structure and functions of Washington’s government, the role of tribal nations, and the importance of civic participation. A unit on economics helps students understand how Washington’s natural resources, industries, and global connections have shaped the state’s economy and current challenges.

The course concludes with a culminating project that requires students to apply what they have learned by researching a Washington State issue of interest and developing a thesis-driven response.

Note: This course is designed to fulfill the Washington State History & Government graduation requirement. This course is required for graduation for students who have not taken Northwest Studies in 7th or 8th grade.
