Liberty High School Course/Club/Misc. Fees

Some courses have required course fees that cover materials and/or transportation necessary for the course and, some courses have optional club fees if students are involved in the co-curricular activities that pair well with certain classes. 

Here is an overview of course fees and optional club fees. It also includes some optional student fees of commonly purchased items (ex: ASB, yearbook, planners, Advanced Placement exam fees, etc.).

If there is a concern about the cost, please see the ASB bookkeeper or your counselor.

Academic English - ML130A/B

Learning Recommendations: Placement based on English proficiency assessment; suitable for Multilingual Learners (MLL) at Level 2.

General Description: This course supports Multilingual Learners in developing foundational proficiency in English, emphasizing essential skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Designed to facilitate the rapid acquisition of language skills, the course also familiarizes students with U.S. cultural contexts to aid in both social and academic integration.

Content: 

• Intensive practice in listening and speaking for communication in academic and everyday contexts
• Instruction in reading comprehension and foundational vocabulary development
• Structured lessons in basic English grammar, including verb tenses and sentence structure
• Writing exercises to build sentence and paragraph skills
• Cultural awareness activities to understand U.S. customs and diverse perspectives

Homework: Light to moderate; approximately 1-2 hours per week, focused on vocabulary practice, reading assignments, and completing writing exercises.

Adaptive Skills - BS140A/B

Learning Recommendations: Individualized Education Program (IEP) required; Case Manager recommendation; Resource students are assigned to classes on the basis of their own choices and with recommendations of resource teachers and parents. The IEP sets forth a plan of goals and objectives, which specifies accommodations and services necessary to meet the students’ needs.

General Description: This course focuses on developing essential functional academic skills for everyday life. Students will engage in activities that enhance their ability to navigate real-world situations, promoting independence and practical problem-solving. Instruction is tailored to individual needs based on IEP goals.

Content May Include: 

• Functional reading, writing, and math skills
• Daily living and personal organization
• Basic money management and financial literacy
• Communication and social skills for real-world interactions
• Problem-solving and decision-making in daily life

Advanced Algebra 2 - MT320A/B

Prerequisites: Must have completed Advanced Geometry or Online Honor Geometry prior to taking this course.

Learning Recommendations: Students experiencing the most success in this class earned a B+ or better in both Advanced Geometry and Algebra 1 or Intensified Algebra 1. All other students are encouraged to enroll in the standard-level Algebra 2 and if they earned a C or below in Advanced Geometry they are strongly advised to enroll in the standard-level Algebra 2.

There is no lab class available with this course; students wanting Lab support should enroll in Algebra 2 and Algebra 2 Lab.

General Description: This advanced level course is a rigorous math class aligned with the Standards for Mathematics. The Mathematical Practice Standards apply throughout this course. Advanced Algebra 2 is designed to prepare students for more advanced algebra-based math and science classes, such as Pre-Calculus and Physics.  This course incorporates concepts and skills from the second year Algebra standards as well as advanced concepts from trigonometry necessary for Pre-Calculus.

This course is designed for students planning to take Pre-Calculus and higher-level math courses (AP/IB) immediately after this course. Students may also take the standard level Algebra 2 then Bridge to Pre-Calculus, providing more time and support to be ready for Pre-Calculus in high school or college.

Advanced Computer Science Topics/Projects - COM335/COM336

Learning Recommendations: Grade of B or better in AP Computer Science A and/or a score of 3 or better on the AP Computer Science A exam.

General Description: This course allows students who have completed AP Computer Science A to continue expanding and deepening their knowledge and understanding of computer science through student-chosen projects. The primary component of the course will be the completion of one or more significant projects chosen and designed by small student groups. Lessons will also be given on certain advanced topics as well as software engineering and project management skills.

• Advanced computer science topics (varying from semester to semester based on student interest)

Homework: Students should expect to spend 2-4 hours a week outside of class working on projects.

Advanced Geometry - MT220A/B

Learning Recommendations: Students experiencing the most success in this class earned a B+ or higher in Algebra 1. All other students are encouraged to enroll in Geometry.

Students who earned a C or below in Algebra 1 should enroll in Geometry. Note: Advanced Geometry does not have a lab class available.  If students are hoping for lab class support it is recommended they take Geometry and Geometry Lab.

General Description: This advanced level course is a rigorous math class aligned with the Standards for Mathematics. The Mathematical Practice Standards apply throughout this course and, together with the content standards, prescribe that students experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations.

Students earning a B+ or better in Advanced Geometry are best equipped for success in Advanced Algebra 2.  Students earning below a B+ will be encouraged to consider standard level Algebra 2.

Advanced Sports Medicine: Evaluation - IN505A/B

Learning Recommendations: Successful completion of Introduction to Sports Medicine is recommended.

General Description: Advanced Sports Medicine: Evaluation is a yearlong course for students interested in deepening their knowledge of sports medicine, with a focus on injury assessment and treatment techniques. Building on introductory skills, students explore advanced topics in emergency care, injury mechanisms, anatomy, and physiology through classroom instruction and hands-on learning. Enrollment in this course requires concurrent enrollment in the Advanced Sports Medicine: Evaluation Internship, where students gain practical experience working with athletes under the supervision of a Certified Athletic Trainer.

Content: 

• Anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology for each body region (ankle, knee, shoulder, etc.)
• Mechanisms of athletic injuries and their evaluation
• Signs, symptoms, and immediate care of injuries
• Preventative techniques such as taping, wrapping, and safety protocols
• Athletic equipment fitting and emergency procedures

Homework: Classroom work includes around 20 minutes per day of review and completion of in-class assignments. Out-of-class requirements include 180 hours per year of after-school observation (about 5 hours per week) and an additional online learning component.

Advanced Sports Medicine: Evaluation Internship - IN511A/B

Learning Recommendations: Successful completion of Introduction to Sports Medicine and concurrent enrollment in Advanced Sports Medicine: Evaluation is required.

General Description: The Advanced Sports Medicine: Internship is a yearlong, hands-on experience for students enrolled in Advanced Sports Medicine courses. Students support a high school sports team outside school hours, providing care to athletes before, during, and after practices and competitions. Responsibilities include injury prevention, treatment, and assistance with therapeutic practices. The internship requires 180 hours of supervised fieldwork, journal entries, and reflections. Completion of this internship qualifies students for a Washington Vocational Sports Medicine Association (WVSMA) certificate.

Content: 

• Field experience with a high school sports team
• Injury prevention and athlete care before, during, and after events
• Internships in healthcare settings such as physical therapy clinics, hospitals, or training rooms
• Exposure to specialty areas including chiropractic care, EMT support, strength training, dietetics, and more

Homework: Students are required to complete 180 hours of internship experience outside of school, which includes tracking hours, submitting a journal, and writing reflections.

Course Fees / Materials: No equipment is required to be provided by the student.

Aerospace Manufacturing: Core Plus - IN400/IN401/IN402

When requesting this course through the course request process, please confirm that all three of these courses are requested. 

• The course is comprised of three full year/1.0 credit courses:
  • Aerospace Manufacturing: English Language Arts - IN400A/B
  • Aerospace Manufacturing: Lab Science - IN401A/B
  • Aerospace Manufacturing: Math - IN402A/B
• The course is held at Liberty High School through the WANIC program. 
• Transportation is not provided. A travel period may be scheduled if needed. 

Learning Recommendations: Open to 11th and 12th-grade students interested in aerospace, advanced manufacturing, and engineering. No prerequisites required.

General Description: Aerospace Manufacturing: Core Plus is an immersive, hands-on course that introduces students to the high-tech world of aerospace and advanced manufacturing. Students will explore the design, construction, and testing of aircraft and components while developing practical skills in materials science, physics, electronics, hydraulics, and precision machining. The course combines industry-standard tools, troubleshooting, and real-world projects to prepare students for certifications, career opportunities, or further studies in aerospace engineering and manufacturing.

Content: Students will learn and practice:

• Aerospace and Manufacturing Basics: Introduction to aerospace, materials science, and applied physics.
• Technical Skills: Precision measurement, soldering, drilling, riveting, and print reading.
• Systems and Mechanics: Hydraulics, pneumatics, rigging, and electric circuits.
• Manufacturing Processes: Shop tools, safety, lean manufacturing principles, and standard operating procedures.
• Problem Solving: Troubleshooting techniques and math for industry applications.
• Capstone Project: Applying learned skills to design, build, and present a final project.

Homework: Primarily hands-on work completed during class. Some project preparation and research may be required outside of class.

Note: 

• Students may earn college credit through this program. Please visit the CTE Dual Credit page for more information. 
• Students may earn Core Plus Aerospace certification upon completion.
• This course fulfills an English Language Arts credit required for high school graduation but does not replace the required English course for grades 9–11. This course may not meet the four-year college admissions requirement for a 4th credit of English for students taking the course in 11th or 12th grade. Students are encouraged to consult the specific requirements of the colleges or universities where they plan to apply.

Algebra 1 - MT100A/B

Learning Recommendations: This course is designed for students to take after completing Math 3, Bridge to Algebra, or 8^th grade on-standard math courses in other districts.  Students who received a C+ or below in Math 3 or have struggled in math previously are strongly encouraged to enroll concurrently in Algebra 1 Lab or consider enrolling in Intensified Algebra in lieu of this course.

General Description: Algebra 1 builds students’ understanding of the first year of algebra standards.  In this course,  students experience algebra as a coherent, useful subject that makes sense of real-life problem situations.  Students will learn how to model real-world problems and solve related problems. Homework: Homework is assigned almost every night and can vary between 10-35 minutes, depending on the student's math knowledge and class time usage. Daily practice is emphasized to solidify learning. Homework is intended for practice and feedback.

Algebra 2 - MT300A/B

Prerequisites: Must have completed Geometry prior to taking this course.

Learning Recommendations: Passed both Geometry and Algebra 1. Students who did not pass Geometry must retake Geometry to graduate as required by the state of Washington.

Students who earned a C or below in Algebra 1 or Geometry, or who want additional support in math, are encouraged to take both Algebra 2 AND Algebra 2 Lab concurrently.

General Description: Algebra 2 builds on Algebra 1 and Geometry. This standard level course focuses on the second year of Algebra standards.  It is designed to prepare students for further algebra-based math and science classes, such as AP Statistics, Bridge to Pre-Calculus, and Physics.

Students taking this course who wish to continue to Pre-Calculus must take the Bridge to Pre-Calculus course prior to Pre-Calculus.

Students wishing to take Pre-Calculus directly after Algebra 2 must take the Advanced Algebra 2 course. See the ISD web site to learn more about options after students complete Geometry to determine if this course best supports your High School and Beyond Plan.

American Literature - EN300A/B

Learning Recommendations: None

General Description: In this year-long course, juniors focus on refining analytical skills in reading, writing, and thinking through the study of American literature. Students examine a wide variety of themes and further develop skills in vocabulary, grammar, mechanics, usage, oral communication, presentation, and research through analytical essays, poetry, narratives, and debates.

Content: Aligned with the Washington State Learning Standards for English Language Arts, the course builds on skills developed in sophomore year, including:

• Reading comprehension
• Informational and complex narrative reading
• Analysis of story elements and literary devices
• Analysis of informational and expository texts
• Making predictions and inferences
• Understanding text organizational structures
• Understanding organizational structures for planning written work 
• Use of multiple drafts and editing
• Collaboration and group evaluation
• Writing for varied audiences, voices, forms, and genres

Homework: Homework, when assigned, should typically not exceed 30 minutes per night or 150 minutes per week. The actual amount of homework will depend on the unit. During novel units, there are nightly reading assignments, usually a chapter depending on the number of pages. Additionally, while writing papers, some writing is expected to be done at home. Vocabulary and various projects will occur throughout the year.

AP African American Studies - SS620A/B

Learning Recommendations: Students should be able to read college-level texts and express themselves clearly in writing.

General Description: AP African American Studies is an interdisciplinary course that examines the diversity of African American experiences through direct encounters with varied sources. Students explore key topics that extend from early African kingdoms to the ongoing challenges and achievements of the contemporary moment. Given the interdisciplinary character of African American Studies, students in the course will develop skills across multiple fields, with an emphasis on developing historical, literary, visual, and data analysis skills.

Homework: Students will have about 2-3 hours of homework per week to complete readings, writing, and preparation for class discussions.

AP Exam Information: Students may register for the AP exam for this course. AP exam fees vary each year, and scholarships are available for students who qualify. Registration takes place in September and October. College credit can be earned with a passing score on the AP exam, though the score required and the amount of credit awarded vary by college.

AP Biology - SC600A/B

Learning Recommendations: Successful completion of Biology and Chemistry with a grade of B or better is highly recommended. Proficiency in the use of computer software for word processing and spreadsheets. Readiness for reading content and volume, and writing expectations geared to a college-level course. Strong reading comprehension, text analysis ability, and writing skills. Considerable time commitment is expected outside of the school day

General Description: AP Biology is an introductory college-level biology course following the College Board curriculum. It emphasizes four main concepts: evolution, cellular processes (energy and communication), genetics and information transfer, and interactions of biological systems. The course develops scientific inquiry and reasoning skills through designing data collection plans, analyzing data, applying mathematical routines, and connecting concepts across biological domains. Students will engage in college-level laboratory investigations and are expected to spend significant time studying outside of class. Successful completion of the AP Biology exam in May may result in college credit.

AP exam registration occurs in September and October, with fees varying each year. Scholarships are available for those who qualify. College credit may be earned with a passing score on the AP exam, though the score qualification and amount of credit earned vary by college.

This challenging and comprehensive course prepares highly motivated students for college-level biology studies and offers the opportunity to earn college credit through the AP exam.

2. Cellular Processes: Biological systems utilize free energy and molecular building blocks to grow, reproduce, and maintain dynamic homeostasis.

Homework: Students should expect homework at least 3-5 times per multi-week unit. Assignments include practice packets, article readings and analyses, and lab activity write-ups. Beyond written homework, students are expected to spend 30-60 minutes per night reviewing and studying AP Biology content.

AP Calculus AB - MT600A/B

Prerequisites: Must have completed Pre-Calculus prior to taking this class.

Learning Recommendations: Designed for students with a B average or better on assessments in Pre-Calculus (CHS) or AP Pre-Calculus. Strong foundation in algebra and pre-calculus concepts. Ability to problem solve, think critically and creatively, persevere through challenges, and work quickly. Interest in working on rigorous and demanding problems. 

General Description: AP Calculus AB is a one-year course that follows the College Board's curriculum, providing an understanding of calculus concepts and experience with its methods and applications. This course covers topics typically included in the first two quarters of college calculus, preparing students for the AP Calculus AB exam.

College Credit: Students may take the AP test at the end of this course.  Colleges may award credit to students passing the AP test.  Bellevue College offers 5 Math credits for Math& 151. Students should verify the specific policy regarding AP Calculus credits at their colleges of interest.

AP Calculus BC - MT601A/B

Prerequisites: Must have completed Pre-Calculus prior to taking this class.

Learning Recommendations: Designed for students who earned a C+ or better in AP Calculus AB or excelled in Pre-Calculus (CHS) or AP Pre-Calculus assessments. Strong foundation in algebra and pre-calculus concepts. Ability and desire to solve challenging problems, think quickly, critically, and creatively. Willingness to persevere through intellectual challenges. Dedication to learning material quickly and deeply, and working independently

General Description: This one-year course develops topics such as limits, derivatives, integration, polynomial approximations, and series for algebraic and transcendental functions. It follows the College Board AP Calculus BC course guidelines, covering all AP Calculus AB topics and extending beyond them for the AP Calculus BC exam preparation. This course also aligns with Bellevue College's Math& 152, 153, and 254 courses, allowing students to earn additional college credits.

College Credit: Students may take the AP test at the end of this course.  Colleges may award credit to students passing the AP test.  Students should verify the specific policy regarding AP Calculus credits at their colleges of interest.

AP Chemistry - SC610A/B

Learning Recommendations: Successful completion of Chemistry with a grade of B or better. Proficiency in the use of computer software for word processing and spreadsheets. Proficiency in fundamental lab techniques and lab safety. Proficiency in Algebra 2; successful completion of or concurrent enrollment in Pre-Calculus is recommended. Ability to read and comprehend college-level content and handle a considerable volume of reading and writing

General Description: This year-long course builds on concepts presented in Chemistry and is designed for students of high ability and interest. AP Chemistry provides a solid, first-year college chemistry experience, both conceptually and in the laboratory. Students will engage in weekly labs that supplement lecture learning, with a strong emphasis on problem-solving skills both on paper and in the lab. This course meets the descriptions of lab-based and algebra-based science courses for college entrance requirements as outlined by the Washington Student Achievement Council. Successful completion of the AP Chemistry exam in May may result in college credit.

General Description: This advanced course is a rigorous, college preparatory course designed to be taken between Algebra 2 and Pre-Calculus.  Bridge to Pre-Calculus will solidify advanced Algebra skills and provide a comprehensive foundation for pre-calculus.  Students may also take this course to better prepare for College math placement tests. Note: This course uses the same state course code as Advanced Algebra and  Trigonometry. It is not to be confused with Bridge to College.

Learning Recommendations: Designed for students who earn a 5 on the AP Calculus AB exam or a 3 or above on the AP Calculus BC exam. A strong foundation in limits, derivatives, integration, polynomial approximations, and series is required.

General Description: This one-year advanced mathematics course extends the calculus sequence for students who have completed AP Calculus BC. General Description: This year-long English 10 course is designed for students seeking further challenges, willing to read additional and more complex literature, engage in public speaking, and undertake complex and extensive writing assignments. Students are expected to independently manage their time and workflow while working in a variety of grouping formats, both independently and collaboratively. This rigorous Honors course prepares students for AP courses in English. 

Content: This course is aligned with the Washington State Learning Standards for English Language Arts and covers: 

• Reading comprehension of complex argumentative, expository, narrative, dramatic, and poetic texts
• Analysis and application of literary, rhetorical, dramatic, and poetic elements and devices
• Evaluation, selection, and application of reputable research sources

Independent Living - IL140A/B

Learning Recommendations: Individualized Education Program (IEP) required; Case Manager recommendation; Resource students are assigned to classes on the basis of their own choices and with recommendations of resource teachers and parents. The IEP sets forth a plan of goals and objectives, which specifies accommodations and services necessary to meet the students’ needs.

General Description: This course focuses on developing essential life skills for success in home, school, community, and vocational settings. Students learn practical strategies to enhance their independence, problem-solving abilities, and daily living skills through hands-on activities and real-world applications.

Intensified Algebra 1 - MT102A/B

Learning Recommendations: Recommended for students successfully completing pre-Algebra, earning a C+ or below in Math 3 mathematics and/or scoring below 3.00 on the SBA. This 2-period block course is designed for students with gaps in their pre-algebra skills or who need additional support learning Algebra.

General Description: Intensified Algebra 1 is a 2-period block class.  This course provides an alternative curriculum for Algebra 1, Intensified Algebra by Agile Minds.  This curriculum is designed to help students who have had difficulty in previous math courses.  This class provides instruction and guided practice over 2 periods. Additionally, this course provide students with additional teacher support while learning new skills, and reinforce past math skills.   One goal of the course is to help each students learn how to learn math, resulting in greater confidence in their ability to continue into future math courses. Students earn Algebra 1 credit for Intensified Algebra and elective credit for Intensified Algebra 1 Lab.

Introduction to Computer Science - INT245

General Description: This survey course is focused on teaching the principles and logic behind how most programming languages work. This is done through hands-on work that often requires creative thinking. This class requires no previous experience programming, but it does require hard work, flexibility, puzzle-solving, and most importantly: a self-starting positive attitude!  Students who have completed computer science courses in middle school are encouraged to take AP Computer Science Principles.

Content: 

• Creating small programs consisting of a few scripts, and creating larger projects.
• All required programming uses SNAP, a block-based programming language.

Homework: Complete assignments not finished during class.
