Health and Wellness Icon for Announcements

Your student’s health teacher will teach the district-adopted F.L.A.S.H. (Family Life and Sexual Health) and HIV/AIDS curriculum during this school year. Families are invited to review the instructional materials that may be used during two public curriculum information sessions at the Issaquah School District Administration Building.

  • Thursday, October 8, at 6 p.m. Presentation lasts approximately 1.5 hours.
  • Saturday, October 10, at 9 a.m. Presentation lasts approximately 1.5 hours.

Each session will include an informal presentation, and curriculum staff will be available to answer questions.

F.L.A.S.H. Instruction

Under the federal Hatch Amendment of 1974, all sexual education instructional materials must be available for parent/guardian inspection. Parents and guardians have the right to exempt their student from sexual health education instruction at any time.

The public curriculum review sessions provide a centralized opportunity to preview the materials. Attendance at a curriculum preview is not required to exempt your student from sexual education. However, families must submit an exemption request in writing to the student’s school principal each year.

To opt your student out of F.L.A.S.H. instruction, please email the request to your student’s principal and health teacher. Families may opt their student out of the entire F.L.A.S.H. unit or individual lessons.

HIV/AIDS Instruction

Please note: The process for exempting a student from HIV/AIDS education is separate from the process for exempting a student from sexual education.

In recognition of the significant health threat presented by HIV/AIDS, the Washington state Legislature passed the Omnibus AIDS Bill in 1988. The law directs local school districts to provide annual instruction to students in grades 5-12 about the pathology and prevention of HIV/AIDS.

Parents and guardians must preview the HIV/AIDS curriculum, which is included within the F.L.A.S.H. curriculum, before exempting their student from HIV/AIDS instruction. This requirement must be completed each year. Please complete the HIV/AIDS opt-out form.

Parents and guardians do not need to attend a public review session if they do not intend to exempt their student from HIV/AIDS instruction. However, becoming familiar with the curriculum may help families talk with their students about this serious health threat. Families may also preview the F.L.A.S.H. curriculum through the King County Department of Public Health.

Additional Curriculum Preview Opportunities

If you are unable to attend one of the public sessions, curriculum materials will be available to preview in the lobby of the District Administration Building during regular business hours, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., September 19 through November 20, 2026.

If your middle school student is taking health during the second or third trimester, materials will be available again during the following periods:

  • February 1 through March 12, 2027
  • May 3 through June 11, 2027

Because of copyright restrictions, detailed F.L.A.S.H. lessons and units for grades 7 and 8 cannot be shared electronically.

Sixth grade F.L.A.S.H. uses the same curriculum as fifth grade. Those lessons and units are available online on the district’s fifth grade learning webpage.
