ISD Community Committee on Grading, Homework 

We are announcing an opportunity for high school students and parents or caregivers of students in grades 6-12 to participate on a committee on grading and homework this fall. This committee will focus primarily on high school grading and homework. We are looking for students and parents or guardians who can bring a range of experiences and perspectives.

What will this committee do?

The Community Committee on Grading and Homework is being formed as part of our new 3-year strategic plan:

• Examine the strengths and challenges of our current grading and homework practices.
• Provide input into a vision for how grading and homework can be improved to better support high expectations for student learning, to cultivate a sense of hope and joy, and to provide opportunities for students to participate in activities that support their interests and passions.
• Give input into short- and long-term goals to support the vision for grading and homework.

  

How will this committee operate?

The work of this committee will occur over six Tuesday evening meetings (see schedule below).  The committee will engage in a structured co-design process using information gathered from teachers and students, using examples and models from other districts, and facilitated discussion and design protocols.  This committee will focus on high school grading and homework, but the content will be used by district and school teachers and leaders to inform strategic actions at all levels.

 

Is this a committee for you?

We are looking for students and parents and caregivers who:

• Can commit to all six meeting times.
• Are willing to actively participate in group discussions.
• Can engage in inquiry, where participants listen and ask questions and collaboratively generate multiple ideas before advocating for specific solutions.
• Are willing to consider different perspectives and work toward shared understanding.
• Have an interest in the topic of grading and homework.
• Are willing to do some pre-reading and processing of information between meetings.

 We also want to make sure the committee reflects the experiences of students and families across our district. In selecting participants, we will consider grade level, school and feeder pattern, community and other factors that help us bring a range of perspectives to the work.

 

When will the committee meet?

The committee will meet from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on the following Tuesdays: October 13, November 3, December 1, January 12, February 2 and March 2.

We will review applicants and select committee members with the goal of creating broad participation across grade levels, high school feeder patterns and communities.  We will notify those who are selected to be on the committee by September 22.
