New: Online Summer School for Middle School Math

The Issaquah School District is expanding options for families of students in (or entering) middle school to access online learning courses over the summer. This option is designed to help students with their math pathway choices or to reinforce learning to be better prepared for their next course. 

All courses are fee-based, with scholarships available based on need. A full description of Learning Recommendations for those interested in summer online learning is available on our website. Here are examples of when a student may want to consider taking on online summer school course:

• Students who feel they need to re-learn some of this year's content to be better prepared for the fall.
   
• Students who want to accelerate their Math or Science pathway into a more advanced pathway offered at their grade level. Two examples of this include:
   
  • Students currently in sixth grade Math 1, who want to take Math 2-3 in the fall. 
    If a student is currently in Math 1 and wants to take accelerate their learning or take on a greater challenge in math, they must talk with their school counselor to register for Math 2-3.  Of course, this skips a semester worth of seventh grade mathematics.  One way to be prepared for such a jump is to take Math 7A during the summer.  Students earning a B or higher in this course should be ready to take Math 2-3 in the fall.
  • Students currently in fifth grade Math 1, who want to take Math 2-3 in the fall. 
    If a student is currently in fifth grade and wants to accelerate their learning or take on a greater challenge in math, they can register for Math 1-2, which does not skip any content, or take Math 2-3, which skips 1.5 years of math content.  That is a huge leap.  Even if a student scored at the recommended 4.07 on i-Ready overall and in the domains, they will encounter many math ideas that they wouldn't have been taught before, which peers in their class learned this year.  One way to make sure a student is prepared for such a leap is to take Math 7A during the summer.  Students earning a B or higher in this course should be ready to take Math 2-3 in the fall.
