Safety Committee Gathers for Quarterly Meeting

Members of the district Safety Advisory Committee met recently for a regularly scheduled discussion of topics related to safety and security in our district. The committee includes representatives from local law enforcement, members of our district security team, principals and building representatives, and representatives of district departments. 

During the meeting, committee members discussed topics including: 

  • How to help families keep students and younger siblings safe and obey the law while in the school pick-up and drop-off lines, and when using taxis or ride-sharing services. Babies and children should be properly and safely seated in car seats or booster seats according to Washington State Law. King County shares information and resources about car seat safety on the county health department website
     
  • Recent trainings that security team members have participated in, including sessions from the Washington State Fish and Wildlife Department, an FBI active shooter training, a Washington state earthquake and tsunami training, a PSESD (Puget Sound Educational Service District) training in prevention of human sex trafficking and child exploitation, a PSESD training about gang-affiliated youth, an FBI training in extremism, and an FBI training in emerging threats to youth. 
     
  • New vape detectors at Skyline High School, paid for using building funds 
     
  • Added security fencing at Liberty and Issaquah high schools to increase perimeter security 
     
  • A regular report on bus paddle violations for October, which totaled 161 violations 

Committee members discussed a number of other topics related to safety and security for students, staff and community members.
