Dear Issaquah School District Community,
Tomorrow’s presidential election marks a key moment of our nation’s democracy, and serves as a reminder of the connection between public education and civic engagement. As a district, one of our goals is about civic engagement; it states that “Students will live as responsible members of society, demonstrating integrity and compassion.” Civic engagement through voting is a fundamental right and a way for individuals, and a community, to be empowered and heard — but that’s not always the case.
The outcomes of the election may lead to excitement, questions or stress, and even anxiety, fear or disbelief, about what the impact may be on our individual lives. Constant media coverage and social media play a role in this. Leading up to the election, the media has covered the divisive tone and tenor surrounding the presidential campaign. In addition, news of polarizing viewpoints and voter participation remain prominent topics.
We care about well-being and mental health, and have resources to ensure every student in our care feels emotionally and physically safe and respected. We are committed to, and responsible for, welcoming and educating every student in our district, regardless of home language, socioeconomic background, immigration status, gender identity, religion or political beliefs.
On Tuesday and beyond, we ask for your support in continuing to make our district and our schools places where we can agree, disagree and engage in a way we hope our students and our children will emulate. We appreciate your support in reinforcing that message.
Our strength is our community, and our diversity makes us stronger. In the face of division, we can continue to support civil discourse and healthy dialogue.
Thank you for your partnership and resilience.
Sincerely,
Heather Tow-Yick
