Superintendent Message: Supporting Students and One Another During International Conflict

Superintendent Message: Supporting Students and One Another During International Conflict

Dear ISD families, students and staff,

In recent days, conflict in Iran has escalated following joint military action by the United States and Israel. While Congress has not issued a formal declaration of war, the level of engagement has increased significantly, including targeted airstrikes and continued retaliatory actions in the region. Media reports indicate that people have been killed and injured in the conflict, and leaders warn that the situation remains uncertain.

Events of this magnitude affect people in different ways. Some may be shocked or angry, while others may feel a deep personal connection, especially if they have family or loved ones in the region or serving in the military. Like adults, students may experience and express fear, confusion, anger or sadness, and may also show anxiety, withdrawal, irritability or a need for reassurance. During times like this, they will need the steady support and presence of their parents, caregivers and the trusted adults around them.

As coverage continues across news outlets and social media, these emotions may be heightened. Students may encounter images or commentary that are difficult to process, which can affect emotional well-being and focus at school. Our commitment remains clear: every school must be a safe, supportive and inclusive place for all students and staff. When questions arise, staff will guide age-appropriate, balanced discussions that emphasize active listening and respectful dialogue.

The most important conversations during times like this often happen at home. Parents and caregivers play a vital role in listening, offering reassurance and helping children understand complex events in ways that reflect family values. It is okay to acknowledge that these issues are complicated and that adults are learning, too. Here are several resources that may help guide conversations at home:

Our school counselors and administrators are available to support any student who may need additional assistance. If your child feels unsafe or uncomfortable, please encourage them to reach out to a trusted staff member.

In times of uncertainty, caring for one another matters most. Thank you for your partnership in maintaining safe, respectful and supportive schools for every student.

Sincerely,
