Warm Weather Resources, Water Safety Tips
Please stay safe while enjoying the warm weather, and remember that although the air is warm, the water is still cold and running quickly!
Consider these ideas to stay safe in and around the water:
- Wear a life vest during water activities.
- Keep a close eye on children and those who aren't strong swimmers when they are in the water.
- Even experienced swimmers can lose muscle control very quickly in cold temperatures.
- Fast-flowing water makes rescues difficult.
- As temperatures rise, stay hydrated and remember that even for legal adults, alcohol increases the risk of hypothermia.
Also remember that it is never safe to leave a person or pet locked in a car, even for a matter of minutes.
Hot temperatures also increase the risk of some health problems, such as heat stroke, heart attacks, stroke and kidney failure. Those at additional risk include young children, adults older than 65, people with chronic health concerns, athletes who exercise outdoors, those who work outdoors, and people who don't have shelter. The City of Issaquah is offering a "Clean Air Giveaway," including a free box fan and filter that can be used to help cool a home and clean the air during times when the air is smokey. Issaquah residents in a household with moderate or low income are eligible to apply. For more information, check out this flyer from the city or visit their website.
Thank you to Eastside Fire & Rescue, health officials and all those who help share these critical reminders each year.
