Preliminary work on the budget for the 2023-24 school year continues, with an overarching goal of bringing the district’s expenditures back in line with revenues. A number of factors pushed the district into a deficit, which staff and the School Board have been working to correct.
Those factors include declining enrollment, COVID costs paired with a relatively low amount of federal COVID relief dollars, increasing inflation, unfunded mandates and more. Last year, the board authorized $11.83 million in budget cuts. The remaining deficit is at least $17.5 million.
At the Jan. 26 School Board meeting, the board will discuss several items that are part of the budget process:
An update on district demographics.
A review of budget reductions from the past two years.
Budget Development Guidelines for the 2023-24 school year budget (board members had an initial conversation about the guidelines at its Jan. 12 meeting. See School Board Recap for details of that discussion).
Budget work and meetings that have already occurred include:
Oct. 13, 2022: Work study session about budget status report.
Nov. 10, 2022: Work study session about budget planning for the 2023-24 school year.
December: Finance Analysis Core Team (FACT) meeting.
Jan. 9: First day of Legislative session.
