Equity Announcements and News
Families that are new to the U.S. school system and have students entering kindergarten in the fall of 2023 are invited to "Welcome to Kindergarten for Families New to the U.S. School System 2023-2024" from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 15 on Zoom.
A storage room in the district office is lined with bookshelves, chock full of appealing choices, ranging from picture books to graphic novels to series aimed at older readers. Donated to the VOICE Mentor Program, the books are available to all current mentors who would like to give a present to their mentee. The collection is about to get an influx of new books, games and activities, thanks to a $2,000 grant from the Issaquah Schools Foundation.
A sense of worth and belonging greatly enhances a student’s ability to learn. Helping to create that feeling is central to what teachers, staff members and administrators do every day throughout our schools – and it’s at the heart of the district’s equity work. What that looks like varies from building to building and by grade level, but in some cases, it can be as simple as providing space.
February is Black History Month, and while our teachers and staff incorporate conversations about the important contributions of African Americans into learning that happens all year long, we appreciate the opportunity to highlight Black history this month, as well. Today we’re sharing a glimpse of what student leaders at two of our middle schools created.
The Liberty High School Equity Club recently partnered with other students, staff members and the Snoqualmie and Duwamish tribes to create a video to explain the purpose of land acknowledgements, and also to acknowledge the First People of this land since Time Immemorial.
