District Seeks Pro/Con Committee Members for November Bond Measure
The Issaquah School District is asking voters to consider a $642.3 million bond measure on the November General Election ballot. If approved, the funding would be used to upgrade safety and security districtwide, for projects that will increase efficiency and modernize our schools and facilities districtwide, to complete the fourth high school and to expand our career preparation programs districtwide.
Any jurisdiction that is proposing a levy or bond measure to the voters must ask for volunteers to serve on the "pro" and "con" committees, then appoint up to three members for each committee. The two committees are responsible for preparing the statements in favor of and in opposition to the ballot measure. While each committee consists of three individuals whose names will be printed with the statement, King County notes that the committees can have an unlimited number of people assist them in preparing the statements. Each committee must also designate a spokesperson to communicate with King County Elections about the materials for the voters’ pamphlet.
To read more about the proposed bond measure, review the presentation given at the May 23 School Board meeting or visit the Bond Advisory Committee webpage.
The pro and con statements must be received by King County Elections from the respective committees by August 13, with the rebuttal statements (if any) due by August 15. They must be no more than 200 words and no more than four paragraphs. Rebuttal statements are limited to 75 words and no more than two paragraphs. For further details, refer to the King County Jurisdiction Manual or the King County Local Voters Pamphlet Packet.
If you are interested in serving on either the pro or the con committee for the district’s November bond measure, please apply by 5 p.m. on July 3. Please include your name, address, email and phone number, as well as a brief statement about why you would like to serve on one of the committees. Email the information to Martin Turney at turneym@issaquah.wednet.edu.
Annual public hearing about proposed school district budget
Each winter and into the summer season, the district finance office prepares a budget for the upcoming school year.
Each summer, the School Board holds a public hearing about the planned budget. That meeting is usually held during the first board meeting of August, with action taken at the second August meeting in time for a board-approved budget to be sent to the Office of Public Instruction in Olympia by August 31.
Any person may attend this public hearing to speak on any aspect of the budget. Copies of the proposed budget are available to anyone by calling 425-837-7024. Board meeting dates are available on line or by calling 425-837-7002. Public notices about budget hearings are also printed annually in local newspapers.
