On Friday, September 27, Pacific Cascade Middle School had a memorable day when Dion Leonard, the author of Finding Gobi, visited to share his journey of rescuing a stray dog he met while running an ultra-marathon in the Gobi Desert. And no, he didn’t come alone—Gobi joined him too!

Leonard told the story of how he and Gobi met, and how the small dog stayed by his side through the grueling race. The students loved hearing about their bond, and those who answered questions got to pet Gobi, which made the day even more special.

In Finding Gobi, Leonard shares how this stray dog started following him during the race, and how they became inseparable through tough challenges. After the race, Gobi went missing, leading to a global search to bring her home. The students were fascinated by how this unlikely friendship turned into a life-changing adventure for both Gobi and Dion.

Gobi’s resilience and determination were a central part of the story, and meeting her in person made it clear why her journey has inspired so many people around the world.

Gobi will also be traveling to Apollo Elementary later this month!
