Talking School Design with a Kindergartner

Earlier this month, a kindergartner named Finn created what he thought could be a new version of Maple Hills, complete with redesigned rooms, invisibility, sail boats and a mix of other new spaces he wanted to include. The plans caught the attention of the district’s Director of Capital Projects, Tom Mullins, who went to the classroom to see them in person.

Finn walked through the entire design, pointing out each part and explaining how it worked. Tom asked questions, Finn answered them, and the two went back and forth on the ideas. Tom also brought real life blueprints for them to discuss and compare as well. It was a real conversation, with Finn's curiosity leading the way from start to finish.

Moments like this are a good reminder of how much creativity students bring to their learning, and why creating space for those ideas matters.
