3412 - Automated External Defibrillators

The Board of Directors authorizes the District to place automated external defibrillators (AEDs) at designated school sites for use in the event of a health emergency, including cardiac arrest. AEDs must be maintained and tested according to the manufacturer’s operational guidelines. Upon acquiring an AED, the District will enlist medical direction from a licensed physician in the use of the AED and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Local emergency medical services organizations will be notified about the existence and location of any AEDs at school sites.

District personnel expected to use AEDs at a school site will receive reasonable instruction in defibrillator use and cardiopulmonary resuscitation through a course approved by the Washington Department of Health.

Any District personnel who uses an AED at the scene of an emergency must call 911 or its local equivalent as soon as possible after the emergency use of the AED and must assure that appropriate follow-up data is made available as requested by emergency medical service or other health care providers.

A person who uses an AED at the scene of an emergency and all other persons and entities providing services are immune from civil liability for any personal injury that results from any act or omission in the use of the AED in an emergency setting, unless the acts or omissions amount to gross negligence or willful or wanton misconduct.

This Regulation does not create any implied or express guarantee, or obligation to use an AED, nor does it create an expectation that an AED or a trained employee will be present and able to use an AED, if a condition arose that made the use of an AED beneficial.

The District will provide instruction in cardiopulmonary resuscitation in at least one high school health class that is necessary for graduation. The instruction will include appropriate use of an AED, which may be taught by video.
