The Issaquah School Board held a regular meeting Thursday, May 12, at the Issaquah School District Administration Building. The meeting was open to the public, broadcasted live on the ISD YouTube channel, and a recording of the meeting is available.

Following is a summary of a few of the topics the board and district staff discussed and action the board took at the meeting. It is not an official record or meeting minutes. To review official minutes from all board meetings, please visit our board meeting archive webpage.

Program Update

Superintendent Ron Thiele shared highlights of a draft plan to provide behavioral and academic support in our schools. This plan is in response to the elimination of Positive Behavior Social-Emotional Support (PBSES) coach positions, which currently provide these supports at our elementary and middle schools, as part of the overall reduction of programs and positions in order to balance the district’s expenditures and revenues.

The draft plan proposes providing three full-time staff to be able to provide support to our schools that, according to the data, need it most. It is important to note that by choosing to place these staffing resources in a position to provide behavioral and academic support, it means that these staffing resources will not be allocated elsewhere as there is still only a certain number of full-time staff that can fit within the budget of the district.

EL-12 Learning Environment

On April 22, 2021, the board adopted an updated version of EL-12 Learning Environment formerly “Learning Environment-Treatment of Students.” EL-2 is now “Treatment of People.” Superintendent Ron Thiele shared that as this EL-12 is new, there is not yet data to refer to as it pertains to the work being done around grading practices. EL-12 is meant to address equities in our programs, K-12 paired with the fact that the grade a student earns should be reflective of mastery of the academic content.
