Middle School Physical Education & Health General Information
Teaching our students good health and fitness principles can lead to a life of healthy practices, resulting in more productive, active, and successful lives.
An understanding of good health and fitness concepts and practices is essential for all students. Teaching our students good health and safety principles can lead to a lifetime of healthy practices, resulting in more productive, active, and successful lives. The Essential Academic Learning Requirements in health and fitness establish the concepts and skills necessary for safe and healthy living, and in turn, for successful learning. Physical Education and Health in middle school are aligned to the state standards.
Students take two trimesters of physical education and one trimester of health each year.

6th Grade Physical Education and Health
6th Grade
Physical Education – Grade 6 (KPE061)
Learning Recommendations: 6th grade standing
Description: Students in sixth grade will combine fundamental skills into more complex movement forms in modified games, rhythmic activities and recreational activities and sports. The goal of six grade to improve their fitness and further develop their fundamental sports skills to allow them to successfully participate in various games. Fitness technology will also be incorporated. Highlights of the course include fitness assessment and goal setting, instruction in a wide range of skills and movement patterns, exercise anatomy, heart rate and components of fitness, and teamwork sportsmanship and cooperation skills.
Health – Grade 6 (KHL061)
Learning Recommendations: 6th grade standing
Description: This course focuses on gaining knowledge about selected health topics. Students are taught communication, decision making, and goal setting skills. Topics include nutrition, substance abuse, wellness, and family and sexual health (FLASH).
7th Grade Physical Education and Health
7th Grade
Physical Education – Grade 7 (KPE071)
Learning Recommendation: 7th grade standing
Description: Students in seventh grade will continue to develop competence in fundamental skills into more complex movement forms in modified games, rhythmic activities and recreational activities and sports. The goal of seventh grade to improve their fitness and further develop their fundamental sports skills to allow them to successfully participate in various games and activities. Fitness technology will also be incorporated.
Health – Grade 7 (KHL070)
Learning Recommendations: 7th grade standing
Description: This course builds upon the health skills and knowledge students learn in 6th grade health. Students are taught communication, decision making, and goal setting skills. Topics include nutrition, substance abuse, wellness, and family and sexual health (FLASH).

8th Grade
Physical Education – Grade 8 (KPE081)
Learning Recommendations: 8th grade standing
Description: In eighth grade, students demonstrate competency in a variety of game situations and recreational activities. Students transition to more complex applications across all types of activities. Students set goals, track progress, and participate in activities to improve health-related fitness. Fitness technology is included. Highlights include targeted and developmentally appropriate training activities, instruction in a wide range of sports, exercise and personal fitness planning.
Health – Grade 8 (KHL080)
Learning Recommendations: 8th grade standing
Description: This course builds upon the health skills and knowledge students learn in 7th grade health. Students are taught communication, decision making, and goal setting skills. Topics include nutrition, substance abuse, wellness, and family and sexual health (FLASH).
Independent Health and Physical Education (KH100)
Learning Recommendations: Enrolled in 8th grade and World Language, ASB Leadership and Music
Description: This course is designed for students enrolled in two electives in 8th grade, Music, ASB Leadership or World Language. The course is taken online asynchronously, outside of school, it teaches all the same content as taught in 8th grade health, and students earn PE credit by completing a fitness log. Students must attend two four-hour FLASH lessons in person, dates and times are shared by the Independent Health Teacher. This is a fee-based course, the fee is $130. Payments will not be collected until after school starts in the fall. If you qualify for free or reduced-price lunch you are eligible for a scholarship. Complete and return the enclosed Scholarship Eligibility Application to your school bookkeeper.
