Special Services

Middle School Special Services

The courses listed below are available to students that meet state eligibility for criteria for special education services and are being served on an Individualized Education Program (IEP). The courses include specially designed instruction, accommodations and related service. Special education personnel at each school will determine specific course availability and as part of the IEP process the team will determine the appropriate courses for students served on an IEP. Special education personal at each school site determine specific course availability based on student need. Therefore, not every course may be available at each school.

Language Arts 6,7, 8 (KL484)

Learning Recommendations: To be determined on an individual basis and the IEP process.

Description: Students work on developing reading fluency and comprehension skills using a research based multi-sensory approach.

 

Math 6 (KM064)

Learning Recommendations: To be determined on an individual basis and the IEP process.

Description: This class focuses on continuing to develop number sense and teach problem-solving strategies that are later generalized to grade level content. Topics covered include operations involving fractions and decimals, estimation and rounding, graphing, measurement using the metric and U.S. customary systems. Concepts involving critical thinking and problem solving are taught through guided practice, group problem solving, math talks and application of math concepts in everyday living situations.

 

Math 7 (KM074)

Learning Strategies (KL 684)

Learning Recommendations: To be determined on an individual basis and the IEP process.

Description: Provides a structured class where students receive study skills instruction and assistance with assignments. Emphasis is placed on executive functioning such as the use of a planner and helping students develop the self-advocacy skills necessary for success in general education classes. This is an elective course open to all Resource Program (I.E.P.) students.

 

Adaptive Skills (KA584)

Learning Recommendations: To be determined on an individual basis and the IEP process.

Description: This course is designed to teach basic functional academic skills related to living in the world. Course may include community outings which allow students to develop communication skills and use of monetary transactions.

 

Vocational Skills (KV584)

Learning Recommendations: To be determined on an individual basis and the IEP process.

Description: This course is designed to teach skills needed in the work environment. Course may include skills such as sorting, greeting others and career exploration.
