Secondary (Grades 6-12) Canvas Workshop for Parents

Family Access Workshop 

Learn how to use Family Access and Canvas for Parents as you support your child’s learning.

This information session is designed to help families learn how to set up the parent account, change language setting, organize your dashboard and provide various tips on using Canvas for Parents. Families will also learn how to use Family Access to access report cards, attendance and other information.  Sessions will be in English, Spanish, Chinese and Russian.  Sessions in other languages are available upon request.

Tips for Communicating Parent-Teacher Conferences - (Elementary School only - K-5)  

It is designed for families who are unfamiliar with Parent-Teacher Conferences.  

Topics will include – How to have a productive dialogue with teachers at conferences, how to schedule a conference, norms at conferences, how to prepare for the conference meeting and suggested questions to ask teachers at conferences.

Sessions will be in English, Spanish and Chinese.  Other languages will be presented upon request in the registration form.

Family Partnership staff help connect families with information on how to navigate schools and who to ask for help with specific school requests.

Financial Aid Information Night (for College or Post High School education)

This event will provide high school students and their parents information on forms and procedures to apply for financial aid to attend college/technical school post-graduation.  The presentation will include information about FAFSA, WASFA, deadlines and timelines.

For help with completing financial aid applications, a workshop will be held in January.

Financial Aid Workshop to complete financial aid applications for College for students and families in Grades 9-12  

This in-person workshop is designed to help high school seniors (grade 12) and their parents work on completing their financial aid application online (FAFSA/WASFA) or to answer questions on the forms. 

5^th grade Transition night for Families new to Middle School in the US 

This event is for families of 5th grade students who will be entering middle school in the Fall. Information presented will help families who are new to the US Public high school system better understand the middle school system.

Each middle school will host their own 5th grade transition night with teachers and school counselors explaining specific information about their specific middle school.

This is an introduction to middle school in the US for families that are new to US public school systems or want more information about middle school before the presentations at their schools.

Topics will include: course selection information, elective class options such as orchestra and choir, PE/Health classes, sports, clubs, health/immunization, costs/fees, supplies, what a typical middle school day looks like, and general information about middle school to help prepare you and your child for this next step.

Presentations will be in English, Chinese and Spanish.  Other language presentations available upon request.

8^th grade Transition Night for Families New to High Schools in the US  

This is a general information event for families new to the U.S high school system. Check the school’s website for specific high school 8^th grade transition events for families already familiar with U.S. high school system. 

Topics: What are high school credits and how are credits earned each year for graduation requirements and college application? Other topics include possible high school opportunities, and state and college testing information. This also included information on the Online Course Request Process for middle and high schools.  District staff will be available to answer questions.
