Head Lice
Issaquah School District follows the recommendations of the CDC, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) when it comes to managing head lice. Head lice are annoying, but they’re not dangerous, don’t spread disease, and aren’t a sign of being unclean. Students do not need to be sent home right away if lice are found—they can finish the school day and return after starting an appropriate treatment, even if some nits are still present. Research shows that “no-nit” policies do not help and can cause students to miss unnecessary time from school, so our district does not follow these policies. Families are encouraged to use safe, recommended treatments and regular combing, and there’s no need for deep cleaning the home or using sprays or fumigants. Our school nurses are here to support families, answer questions, and help students stay healthy and in school.
